Understanding the Bible as a beginner
•Holy Production
The Bible is the best-selling book in history, but also one of the hardest for a beginner to approach. 66 books, thousands of years of history, varied literary genres... Where to start?
1. Don't start with Genesis
It may seem counterintuitive, but reading the Bible from start to finish is the best way to get discouraged. Start with the Gospel of John instead.
2. Choose a good translation
The NIV or ESV are excellent for a first read in English. The NLT is even more accessible.
3. One chapter a day
Consistency beats intensity. Reading a single chapter per day with attention is infinitely more valuable than rushing through 20 chapters.
4. Context is king
A verse taken out of context can say anything and its opposite. Before drawing conclusions, read the whole chapter.
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." — Psalm 119:105
